it is also called as salt producer
it needs only 1 electron to fill its outer shell
it has 7 valence electron
this group is the most reactive one (flourine)

roumit: hydrogen has 1 electron but then also it can be considered in this group ? why
Mahitha2004: hydrogen is not considered in group 7 and hydrogen has some unique features
roumit: I think group 17 is called Halogen group. and group 7 is for transition elements
Mahitha2004: group 17 sorry missed 1
roumit: Oh it's okay . But hydrogen can be considered in two groups 1st and 17th

Halogens are diatomic which are held together by van der waal's forces. First three elements of the halogen family are non metals. The metallic character may be observed in the last two elements. All the elements of halogen family are color darkens with the increase in atomic number. The values of ionization potential are high. All halogens are electro negative. All halogens are highly reactive like alkali metals. Electron affinities of halogens are high and posses strong tendency to accept an additional electrons.
