The Deccan trap is one of the largest volcanic features in the world. It is found in the Indian peninsular. Its features are as follows:-

• It covers as area of about 500,000km^2. It is widely prevalent in the provinces found in the Deccan plateau.

• It is made up of mostly basaltic lava that flooded these regions and in most areas, it is about 2000 m thick.

• The most prevalent type of soil in this region is black in color due to the presence of titanium salts.

•The Deccan trap has been subjected to erosion and tectonic movement over the years that have resulted in its staircase-like structure and this is why it is referred to as a trap.

•The soil, majorly clay, is moisture retentive and very productive, however, it is free of humus- this is especially so in the lower lands.
