4 Goals of psychology
Psychology is not about reading minds or trying to control others, per se. The four main goals of psychology are to 1) describe, 2)explain,3) predict and 4)control the behavior and mental processes of others.Psychology is a science. It aims to understand the behavior of others and gather information about the way the brain works in order to better serve humanity.
The four goals of psychology are :
1. Describe
Describing things is something that we do every single day, and it's something that we often don't think about, but describing in psychology is slightly different than the way we describe things every day. Through describing human behavior, we are better able to understand it and gain a better perspective.
2. Explain
Psychologists are very interested in being able to explain behavior rather than just being able to describe it. Explaining behavior goes hand in hand with describing it. This helps in providing answers to questions about why people react in a certain way, why they do the things they do and the factors which affect personality, mental health, actions, etc. With the help of scientific experiments - to make sure they get the same results every time - psychologists formulate mini and grand theories to explain aspects of human behavior and psychology.
3. Predict
Making predictions about how we think, and act is the third goal of psychology. Looking at past observed behavior (describing and explaining) psychologists then aim to predict how that behavior will appear again in the future and if other people might exhibit the same behavior.
4. Change / Control:
This final goal is the most important goal in psychology. Psychology aims to change, influence or control behavior to make positive, constructive, meaningful and lasting change in people's lives. The goal of change/control works to impact and bring about changes in people's lives and influence their behavior for the better.
