All the spheres in the system interconnect and overlap. No sphere works on its own. These spheres are closely interlinked. For example, many birds (biospheres) fly through the air (atmospheres), while water (hydrospheres) often flows through the soil (lithospheres). In fact, the spheres are so closely linked that a change in one sphere often results in a change in one or more of the other spheres. These changes that take place within the ecosystem are referred to as events. An event may cause changes to occur in one or more of the spheres, and/or an event may cause changes in one or more of the four spheres of the Earth.
