The Nerve cell is also known as neurons. Depending upon the direction of transmission of impulse the neurons are of three types and they have different functions and they are:
1) Sensory neurons: The Sensory neurons transmit impulse from the sense organs towards the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord).
2) Motor neurons : They transmit impulse from the central nervous system towards the effectors i.e., muscles and glands.
3) Connector neurons, Relay neurons or Interneurons : They occur in the central nervous system and serve as link between sensory and motor neurons.
