Answer:

A salt bridge, in electrochemistry, is a laboratory device used to connect the oxidation and reduction half-cells of a galvanic cell (voltaic cell), a type of electrochemical cell. It maintains electrical neutrality within the internal circuit, preventing the cell from rapidly running its reaction to equilibrium.

Function of Salt Bridge are :-

  • It maintains the electrical neutrality of half cells.
  • It completes the circuit by allowing flow of electron.
  • It minimizes the liquid - liquid junction potential.

Extra Information :

Conditions for Electrolytes in cells are -

  1. INERT ELECTROLYTE : So that it do not react with any of ions / rods of half cell.
  2. GOOD IONIC MOBILITY AND EQUAL MOBILITY OF CATION AND ANION : So that both half cells are neutralised simultaneously.
