Functions of skin:

  • Protection from mechanical shocks and excess UV rays.
  • Works as a barrier and prevents the entry of microorganisms.
  • Prevents excessive loss of water by evaporation.
  • Serves as a sense organ for touch,pain,pressure,heat etc.
  • Prevents the loss of heat in cold weather and facilitates loss of heat in hot weather.
  • Stores reserve food in the form of fat contained in special cells.
  • Assists in the process of excretion of water,salts and to a very limited extent urea, through sweating.
  • Synthesis of vitamin D when exposed to sunshine.
