- Works as a barrier and prevents the entry of microorganisms.
- Prevents excessive loss of water by evaporation.
- Serves as a sense organ for touch,pain,pressure,heat etc.
- Prevents the loss of heat in cold weather and facilitates loss of heat in hot weather.
- Stores reserve food in the form of fat contained in special cells.
- Assists in the process of excretion of water,salts and to a very limited extent urea, through sweating.
- Synthesis of vitamin D when exposed to sunshine.
