Ribs- The ribs protect the lungs and expand as we inhale to facilitate space for the lungs to expand like the diaphragm. The ribs then contract expelling the air in the lung.

Diaphgram - When the diaphragm contracts and moves lower, the chest cavity enlarges, reducing the pressure inside the lungs. To equalize the pressure, air enters the lungs. When the diaphragm relaxes and moves back up, the elasticity of the lungs and chest wall pushes air out of the lungs.

Ribs:-

in inspiration ribs move upward and outward in expiration ribs move outwards and downwards

Diaphragm:-

in inspiration diaphragm contracts and flattens downward and in expiration diaphragm relaxes and move upwards to dome shape
