What are the functions performed by the testis in human beings?

The function​s performed by human testis are:

1) Testis are the reproductive organ which is primary in males. Testis have seminiferous tubules where the production of sperm occurs.

2) Sperms are the male gametes which when fuses with an ova, forms a zygote.

3) Testis is also concerned with the production of testosterone, a male hormone and androgen, which are required for the development of male characters in an individual.

4) Testis are enclosed within a sac like structure called scrotum.

Functions of testes:

The testes has only two major functions which includes production of sperms and secretion of male hormones.

Production of sperms:

  • The sperms are produced by seminiferous tubules through ejaculation.
  • It plays a major role during human fertilization.
  • During copulation process, the insemination takes places and the sperms from the male fuses with the zygote in the female to form egg which gets developed into a fetus.

Secretion of male hormones:

  • Testosterone which is a form of androgen which is a male hormone.
  • This hormones controls the growth of the male reproductive system (genital organs) and development of the masculine features which includes beard growth and deepening of voice.
