,Intermolecular forces include electromagnetic forces of attraction or repulsion that act between atoms and other types of nearby particles, such as atoms or ions, to mediate interaction between molecules.

General types of intermolecular forces are,

  • Dipole-Dipole interaction: This force mainly occurs between two polar molecules. Permanent dipoles are created in polar molecules due to variations in the electronegativities of the atoms that form a covalent connection. One molecule's partially positive section attracts another molecule's partially negative portion.
  • Ion dipole interaction: This force occurs between ions and polar molecules. Their strength of interaction mainly depends upon size of polar molecule and size and charge of ion.
  • Ion induced dipole interaction: A non-polar molecule is polarized by an ion placed near it in this form of interaction. When non-polar molecules gain a charge, they behave like induced dipoles.
  • Dipole induced dipole interaction: Ion-induced dipole interactions are analogous to these interactions. The distinguishing feature is that non-polar molecules are turned into induced dipoles when a polar molecule is present nearby.
  • Dispersion force or London force: It is the weakest force and acts over a small distance. The mobility of electrons causes this force, which creates momentary positive and negative charged areas.
