Hormones of adenohypophysis secretes the following hormones :

\bigstar Growth hormone (GH) :

  • It is also known as Somatotropic hormone(STH). This hormone causes cells to grow and multiply by uptake of amino acids, accelerates protein synthesis and decreases the catabolism of proteins.
  • This hormone is more effective in the presence of thyroxin.

\bigstar Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH):

  • It stimulates synthesis and secretion ofhormones of thyroid gland.

\bigstar Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH):

  • It stimulates synthesis and secretion of hormones of adrenal gland.

\bigstar Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH):

  • In females, FSH stimulates growth and development of ovarian follicles.
  • In males, FSH and androgens regulate spermatogenesis.

\bigstar Luteinizing hormone (LH):

  • In females, LH induces ovulation of Graafian follicles and maintains the corpus luteum formed from the remnants of Graafian follicle.
  • In males, LH is called interstitial cell stimulating hormone (ICSH). It stimulates interstitial cells to secrete testosterone.

\bigstar Prolactin (PRL) :

  • It regulates the growth of mammary glands and formation of milk in mammary glands.

\bigstar Melanocyte stimulating hormone (MSH):

  • Released from pars intermedia, it stimulates the melanocytes and regulates the pigmentation of skin.
