India has a vast coastline in the Indian ocean. No other country has such a vast coastline in the Indian Ocean, so India holds a strategic position there. The long coastline helps to maintain good trade relations with other countries. The vast coastline also serves as the natural boundary of India.  India has great importance in the ocean, that is why it has been after it that is Indian ocean.
Long coastlines should give access to more food and more ports. India however does not have many natural ports but at least the access to sea food probably saves thousands of lives. The latitudinal extent of India gives her varying climates, whereas the longitudinal extent of India gives her more of similar climates. Luckily India is the widest at longitudes where the weather is suitable for agriculture, hence a large part of India is arable at least weather/temperature wise. Land and water is a different game altogether.
