There are two legends associated with the discovery of tea.

There is an Indian legend which goes like this. About the origin of the tea it is said that a Buddhist monk (name is mentioned in the chapter...it was from NCERT's English book, chapter name Tea From Assam. Do include the monk's name from there.) while meditating felt sleepy. To avoid it he cut his eye lids and threw them. Few sapling sprouted out of the eyelids. It is said they were tea leaves. When those leaves were mixed with water and drank, it banished sleep.
The other under current story lies like this that a king in China, an emperor was in habit of drinking water after boiling it. Few leaves of the twigs burning under the pot to boil water, fell into his boiling water. The fact goes that those were tea leaves.

Tea was first drunk in China as far back as 2700 BC. 'Tea', 'chai' and 'chini' words have their origin in China.

Hope it helps. Thank you. :)

There are many legends or stories about the discovery and origin of tea. According to a story, the tea was discovered in China. The Chinese Emperor used to drink boiled water. Once while boiling it, few leaves of a twig burning under the pot fell into it. The Emperor found the flavour delicious. Those were later named as tea leaves. Another legend says that an ancient Buddhist ascetic, Bodhidharma, cut off his eyelids when he felt sleepy during meditation. Ten tea plants grew out of his eyelids. Thus, the tea was discovered.
