It failed to explain why all elements don’t form coordination compounds. It failed to explain the directional properties of bonds in coordination compounds. It does not explain the colour, and the magnetic and optical properties shown by coordination compounds.

Hey !!

LIMITATIONS OF WERNERS THEORY

This theory does not explain the following queries

  • Why is the complex forming tendency limited to a few element only ?
  • Why bonds in the co-ordination complexes are of directional nature ?
  • Why are certain compounds of magnetic nature and show geometrical and optical isomerism ?

To answer the above questions, a number of attempts have been made to extend the existing different theories of bonding to corrdination compounds. A few of these in the chronological order are :

  1. Valence Bond Theory (VBT) in 1930s
  2. Crystal Field Theory (CFT) in 1950s and 1960s
  3. Ligand Field Theory (LFT) in 1960s onwards
  4. Molecular Orbital Theory (MOT) in 1960s onwards

GOOD LUCK !!
