In the Ganges Plains or the Northern Fertile Plains, this is the most commonly used irrigation method. Canals are used to irrigate the soil in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and North Rajasthan.
Dams: Dams are huge, raised walls built across rivers to hold back water. The river water accumulates in the form of a lake and, if possible, is taken through canals to irrigate the fields.
