the process by which glucose molecules are broken down to release energy is called respiration. glucose combine with oxygen to produce carbon dioxide water and energy This energy is realsed in the form of ATP.the entire process of respiration takes place partially in the cytoplasm and partially in the mitochondria. The process of cellular respiration is similar in plants and animals the process of respiration takes place inside the cell so it is also called cellular respiration .

Aerobic respiration takes place in the presence of oxygen.in aerobic respiration 38 molecules are released from oxidation of one Glucose molecule .

Anaerobic respiration takes place in the absence of oxygen.in this process glucose is not completely oxidised to form carbon dioxide and water. It is oxidised to produce ethyl alcohol and lactic acid. Only 2 ATP molecules are released from oxidation of one glucose molecule.
