The major problems faced till 1870's in transporting food over long distance:

Till 1870, meat was shipped from America to Europe in the form of 'live animals', who were slaughtered on importing. The meat was hence more expensive and could be consumed only by the upper classes as it was affordable to them only.

  • But with the invention of 'refrigerated ships', 'animals were slaughtered' at the beginning and then 'shipped to markets' in the form of frozen meat.
  • This resulted in lowering down the shipping cost, cheaper meat prices and it allowed the poor in Europe to consume meat.
