How are synthetic fibers made?

Fibres are made up of polymers. long chain molecules known as polymers when combined together lead to the formation of fibres. In factories, already prepared polymer chips of particular fibre are purchased and then converted into fibres. The fundamental idea behind this is that these solid polymer chips are firstly melt or dissolved in particular solvent such that the characteristics of the polymers are not affected. For this various methods are available. Then this molten polymer is passed through spinnerets which basically consists of very fine holes. When the melt is passed through it we received continuous length of the fibre which is solidified immediately. In case solution is prepared by dissolving the polymer in suitable solvent then the solution needs to be separated out between spinneret and solidification state. Again various methods are available for that. Now continuous length of the fibre which is received is sent for further finishing process. These long lengths can either be used as it is in form of filaments or cut into small lengths known as staple fibres.
Hope this helps.
