Raja raja chola was the first king ( probably in the whole world at that point of time maybe exeption of rome, sparta) to have a standing army. till then at times of war, king would call for all able bodied men of the kingdom to form the army, and many would come forth just for the riches that can be got from pillaging when they win. raja raja, formed a standing army . to give you a small comparison, USA has a size if 1.5 million sq kms, and india 3.28 lakh sq kms, they have an army of 1 million EACH approximately, whereas raja raja with only 50K sq kms had a standing atrmy of 800K, with 30,000 war elephants, 3000+ ships and naval force of 600K, during non war time he put his army to good use, they built the largest man made lake in India 16 milesX 11 Miles in his kingdom was built by his army during peace time. can you imaginethe wealth of the kingdom then to feed such a huge army. that is why cauvery issue is so sensitive in tamil nadu, the core of chola kingdom was the cauvery delta that gave riches tofeed & conquer a large swath of land even across oceans, rrajendra honed the naval force to 6000 +vessels and elephants to 60000. he conquered the present day malaysia, singapore, vietnam, thailand, cambodia, indonesia, his conquests can be traced by tracing the coast line of Asia starting from tamilnadu, almost upto china. and all the islands there around! as recent as this year a movie called kadayam kondan was banned in malaysia!, kadayam was the original name of malaysia during the chola period. it was conquered and converted into a vassal state of the cholas. though the current movie is not about capture of malaysia of that era, but the name itself was obnoxious to them reminding them of a period of history when their country was a vassal state.kadayam was captured by raja raja as they were troubling his trade ships passing thro the straits of malacca. it is history that when his emissary’s complained, he sailed with 3000 vessels and without landing a single soldier on land the kadayam king surrendered on seeing the size of the force!

hope my answer is helpful to you
