Explanation:

An ionic compound is formed by transfer of electrons.

Atomic number of sodium is 11 and atomic number of chlorine is 17. The chlorine atom has deficiency of 1 electron, so in order to complete its octet it will take one electron from sodium. As a result, there will be formation of an ionic bond.

That is why, sodium chloride is an ionic compound.

In ionic compounds as both the combining atoms have opposite charges therefore, there exists strong electrostatic or coulombic force of attraction.
