hey mate,
Swachhta (cleanliness) was an idea first articulated by Mahatma Gandhi, who said that sanitation is even more important than political freedom. A mission as fundamentally transformative as Swachh Bharat will not only result in intended physical outcomes but also a lifestyle and mindset change.
One might cynically argue that building toilets is easier than putting them to use. This is valid only up to a point. Credible surveys show that 85% of toilets built under this mission are being used. Long-inculcated or forced habits take time to change, but they definitely will. The alternative to not using toilets is to walk long distances either at night, as is the case mostly with women and girl children, or at sunrise. This is more a forced option and a habit than a preferred choice. Such habits must be made to vanish, and will for sure.
It’s about women
Prime Minister Modi’s mission will work for sure since its success will have the most liberating impact on the women of our country. Surely no one can seriously believe that defecating in the open is a safe and viable option for women.
All houses being built under the ‘Housing for All’ mission will have toilets and the title will vest in the name of women, either individually or jointly. This is about women’s empowerment, freeing them from domestic subjugation besides liberating them from humiliating open defecation.
Proper integration of various components of the sanitation chain such as ensuring water supply, seepage management, sewerage networks, prevention of manual scavenging and solid waste management form the key for the Swachh Bharat Mission. Given the efforts underway to make this chain work, the way forward is towards a Clean India.
Cynics and critics may point at something lacking here or there. They cannot, however, question the need for Swachh Bharat. With such consensus and the evidence available so far, the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan will work — the only alternative is neither affordable nor viable in an aspirational India. The ongoing mass mobilisation campaign ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ highlights sanitation as the real service to the nation. We owe a ‘Swachh Bharat’ to the Mahatma on the occasion of his 150th birth anniversary in 2018
Every situation has some advantages and some disadvantages. Considering swatchbharath , As our country is in need for cleanliness, this could be a great initiative and this would serve as a great revolution in INDIA. After a couple of years or in next generation every citizen get digested with this revolution , as a part of this I noticed every primary school is celebrating a day as swatchbharath day . A student will know the importance of cleanliness especially in a developing country like INDIA. not only in a school even colleges as well in PSU'S . As our pm ji initiated this on gandhi jayanthi, we could learn from him that this is the best way to give tribute to our leaders . Coming to precautions a thought should be created in every mind that this couldn't be limited to only that day . so I believe that this is a very good decision.
It has been almost 3 years since Indian PM Narendra Modi launched Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission), marking the beginning of world’s largest ever sanitation drive. These three years have witnessed an increase in awareness where reputed people from various domains of life have contributed in increasing awareness to the integral problem which largely impacts personal and societal hygiene. Thankfully, with an unquestionable commitment from the Prime Minister of India, access to rural toilets in India have increased by 62%.India’s experience with ‘Toilet – Ek Prem Katha’ has been a huge paradigm shift and one can definitely say, Swachh Bharat, is an impossible target.
There is no denying the fact that Swachh Bharat is indeed a herculean task. Various government initiatives have been announced and implemented to provide toilets. Be it NGOs, Media, citizens and other stakeholders – the whole idea of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan has been received with much applause at the grassroots level. Schools and colleges have been involved as well so that the younger generation can understand the concept more easily and spread it in the household. With changing urban dynamics, intelligent sanitation solutions are coming up in India, giving a completely new outlook to the whole idea of Clean India. Nevertheless, it is only the beginning and one can definitely say that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream of Swachh or Clean India is not a case of distant reality.
