Dear Student,
● Answers with Explaination -
Aa we know, oxidation number of oxygen is -2 and that of hydrogen is +1.
(a) H₂S₄O₆
Sum of oxidation states of all entities is equal to charge on the compound.
2×H + 4×S + 6×O = 0
2×(+1) + 4×S + 6×(-2) = 0
2 + 4S - 12 = 0
4S = 10
S = +2.5
(b) Fe₃O₄
Sum of oxidation states of all entities is equal to charge on the compound.
3×Fe + 4×O = 0
3Fe + 4×(-2) = 0
3Fe = 8
Fe = +8/3
(c) CH₃CH₂OH
2×C + 6×H + 1×O = 0
2C + 6×(+1) + 1×(-2) = 0
2C + 6 - 2 = 0
2C = -4
C = -2
(d) CH₃COOH
2×C + 4×H + 2×O = 0
2C + 4×(+1) + 2×(-2) = 0
2C + 4 - 4 = 0
C = 0
Hope this helps you...
