The name "phyllodes," which is taken from the Greek language and means "leaflike".
They are modified petiole or a shoot that connects the stem with leaf. In some plants, these become flattened and widened leaf like appearance which can do photosynthesis in place of leaves. While the leaf itself becomes reduced or vanishes altogether.
