Oersted determined the relationship between electricity and magnetism. As per him, current carrying wire produces a magnetic field around it.

He carried out following experiment to prove his hypothesis:-

When electric current is passed from South to North directions and the wire is placed over the compass needle, the compass needle gets deflected towards West direction.

On reversing the direction of current, the compass needle gets deflected in the opposite direction i.e. East direction.

Lastly, when current is switched off, then there is no deflection in compass needle
