There are many problems in the country's road transport. Some of these issues have been discussed:

1. Most Indian roads are unsafe (42.65%) and are not suitable for the use of vehicle traffic. The poor maintenance of the roads disturbs the problem especially in the rainy season.

According to an estimate, there is a loss of rupees per year. 200 crore on the wear and tear of vehicles due to poor quality of roads Even the National Highway is less than the lack of inadequate capacity, weak sidewalks, poor rides quality, disturbing bridges, uncontrolled level shifts, crowded cities (lack of near-roads), road facilities and safety measures.

2. A major problem on Indian roads is a mixture of traffic. The same road is also used by high speed car, truck, two wheeler, tractor, animal powered vehicles, cyclists and animals. Even highways are not free from this disease. It increases the time of traffic, crowds and pollution and road accidents.

3. There are many check posts, tolls and octroi collection points on the roads, which reduce the speed of the traffic, waste time and cause the transporter to irrigate. The rate of road taxes varies from state to state and it is difficult to obtain inter-state permits.

4. There is a shortage of facilities like repair shops, first aid centers, telephones, clean toilets, restaurants, comfort areas along with Indian shops. Road safety is given very little attention and traffic laws are allegedly infringed.

5. Due to long pregnancy period and low returns, there is very little participation of private sector in road development in India. The lawmaking agenda for private investment in roads is also not satisfactory. Road engineering and construction is not yet ready to gear itself to face future challenges.

6. There is no stability in the policy related to highway development in the country. It has changed with the change of government. There are many agencies that take care of the construction and maintenance of various types of roads. Meanwhile there is no coordination amid these agencies; their conclusions are frequently inconsistent and contradictory.

7. There is lack of funds for the construction and maintenance of roads. Rather than giving high importance to this work, the percentage allocation has decreased over the years, while the percentage of plan allocation in the first five year plan was 6.9 percent; it has reduced by 3 percent in the eighth plan.
