People with disabilities” embodies a large population. I'm going to focus on a few issues I've identified, in both my field and research, but that does not mean all people with disabilities are facing the same issues.
AccessibilityWhether we are talking about an individual with a physical, visual, auditory, or cognitive impairment accessibility is a major issue in society. Public buildings are required to be ADA compliant, but are rarely audited unless someone complains. For instance, I completed the report on a school I previously worked at and it had failed for ramp steepness, lack of railings, and handicap accessible bathrooms. So even though a building may have parking for individuals who are handicapped, rhis does not mean they are always accessible. A lack of accessibility could also mean a lack of visual supports in a public building for someone who is deaf or hard-of-hearing, or auditory supports for someone who is blind.
