Each type of manure has its own physical, chemical, and biologicalcharacteristics. Cattle and horse manures, when mixed with bedding, possess good qualities for composting. Swine manure, which is very wet and usually not mixed with bedding material, must be mixed with straw or similar raw materials.

The qualities attributes of well-prepared compost:
The decomposition of organic matter in a controlled manner is called compost.
The key quality attributes are:
- The composition of brown (carbonaceous) to green matter (nitrogenous) should lie between 20/30 to 1 parts that is 20 to 35 parts of carbon to only 1 part of nitrogen to avoid loss of essential nitrogen into the atmosphere upon degradation by the micro-organisms if present in higher content.
- Moisture content should lie between 40 to 60 percent to avail proper working of microorganisms under aerobic conditions.
- Optimum temperature is necessary in order to carry out the degradation of organic matter by the microbes in a proper manner. Under high or low temperature the microbes’ stops degradation or they may die.
- Proper aeration provides circulation of air in a well-controlled fashion which also fades away odour. The frequency of turning should accelerate the process of degradation.
- Ph should be maintained to avoid more alkalify or acidity of the compost.
