Volcanic eruptions that caused large-scale climate change may also have been involved, together with more gradual changes to Earth's climate that happened over millions of years. Whatever the causes, the huge extinction that ended the age of the dinosaur left gaps in ecosystems around the world.

65 million years ago a 10 kilometre wide asteroid generated an explosion bigger than all the hydrogen bombs on Earth. It dug a 180 kilometre wide crater in Mexico and spread a layer of ash around the world. Widespread fires, followed by darkness and extreme cold, caused the dinosaurs to become extinct and some think because of the climatic changes too.
