Answer:
Relationship between the French and Tipu Sultan.
The French tried to enter into alliances with Indian rulers with the aim of displacing the British from the Indian sub-continent. This attempt gained pace during the 18th century.
An alliance was formed by the French during the rule of Louis XVI with the South Indian ruler Tipu Sultan. Several fleets of French volunteers were sent to India as a result, under the pretext of helping Tipu Sultan, who also wanted to rid the country of the British.
The Franco-Indian alliance were however not very successful as the British had established themselves firmly on the sub-continent by then, and France had also made peace with Great Britain.
