what are the rules for changing direct speech to indirect speech

please say in detail info.

1. The tense of the reported speech changes into past continuous.

2. The comma and inverted commas are removed after conversion.

3. If the reported speech is in future tense then there will be no change in tense in the indirect speech.

4. Words like 'that', ' whether', etc. Is added in place of commas (usage is based on the type of sentence. For eg. If reported speech is a yes/no question type then in indirect speech whether is added in place of commas)
