Presence of salts of Calcium (Ca) and Magnesium (Mg) gives hardness to water. Salts like Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) , Magnesium carbonate (MgCO3), Calcium bicarbonate (Ca(HCO3)2), Magnesium bicarbonate (Mg(HCO3)2), Calcium sulphate (CaSO4), Magnesium sulphate (MgSO4), Calcium chloride (CaCl2), Magnesium chloride (MgCl₂) causes hardness to water .

Heya...,
Permanent hardness in water ishardness due to the presence of the chlorides, nitrates and sulphates of calcium and magnesium, which will not be precipitated by boiling. The lime scale can build up on the inside of the pipe restricting the flow of water or causing a blockage.
Hope it helps you..
