The scope of Political Science implies its jurisdiction or subject matter. Political Science is a very wide and comprehensive subject. There is no agreement among the Political Scientists as regard to the scope of Political Science.

I don’t think there is such a concept as ‘political theory.’ I graduated with a degree in Poli. Sci. To this day I remember the first day at Poli. Sci. 101 many years ago. The first day the professor asked all of us: ‘What is politics?’ We all tried to come up with erudite answers. He patiently listened to all of them. Finally, he said, if a husband and wife argue, that’s politics, if a parent and child argue, that’s politics, and so on. – Taking Political Science usually requires taking courses in history and philosophy as well. Even literature. Leo Tolstoy’s “War and Peace” is totally fictional, but how would you ever be able to get a handle on Napoleon’s invasion of Russia without reading it? Dr. Zhivago is totally fictional, although when reading it one can quickly make out the real life characters, dealing with the early days of the Soviet Union. Gone With the Wind, fictional, dealing with the American Civil War. – Philosophy, Thomas Hobbes, 1651, Life outside society is ‘solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.’ Plato: the person who has the right to govern is the ‘philosopher king.’ Machiavelli: ‘The Prince [government] can do whatever advances the state.’ “The end justifies the means.” – So if there is such an animal as ‘political theory,’ then it is an amalgam of many different strands of thoughts.

Despite this disagreement, we may make an attempt to define the scope of Political Science which includes the followings: 1. A study of the State and Government: Political Science primarily studies the problems of the State and government. The state is defined as a group of people organised for law within definite territory. The State possesses four characteristics, viz. Population, territory, government and sovereignty. Government is an agent of the Stale. Political Science studies the activities of the State and explains the aims and objectives of the State and Government...
