India is a very diverse country. After every 50 Km the language changes. If the language doesn't change the accent, the dialect changes hugely. The Bengali spoken in Kolkata is not at all similar to the Bengali spoken in Asansol or Siliguri. My friend who's quite fluent in Punjabi can't understand the way people speak in the rural areas of the state. Every state has atleast 5-6 languages. Its very difficult to survive in such multi-cultural place without having a common bond, which is what Hindi is.
In my building my next door neighbor is a Bengali and the family right opposite to my house is Punjabi, we even have people from North east living on the same floor. Now they don't expect me to learn their respective languages and neither do I. It doesn't matter what they speak at home, when we get together, we have Hindi to our rescue.

Why just building, look at your close friends, do they all speak the same language at home? If Hindi would not have been there, I would have to learn Punjabi, Sindhi, Maithli, Bengali, Tulu, Haryanvi to speak to my friends. Which is not practical. Hindi is our savior language.

In my opinion everybody loves their mother tongue and is comfortable in it but India being such a diverse country not everybody can learn all the regional languages, so Hindi is like a 'bridging the gap language'.
