What are the similarities between Neptune and Earth?

They are spherical masses that orbit the sun, and both have a magnetic field surrounding them.

Otherwise, not a whole lot else. The earth is, in many ways, more similar to Pluto than it is to Neptune. If Neptune has a solid surface, it is beneath thousands of miles of thick atmosphere. It is what is colloquially known as a "gas giant".

But Earth and Pluto have solid surfaces that can be seen by cameras in orbit, with landscapes and other features that indicate recent or even ongoing subsurface activity.

There is a currently active debate on what the definition of a planet is. In my opinion, Neptune and Earth simply should not be part of the same category; they are just too different from one another. But if we really do want to lump the two into one category, then objects like Ceres, which are far more similar to Earth than Earth is to Neptune or Uranus, should also be in that same category: planets. But that won't happen because some people worry that the brains in fourth grade classrooms (I assume they mean both students and teachers) can't handle the notion that there might be more than ten planets.
