Answer:

For the most part, there is little to separate Northerners and Southerners other than geographical boundaries, such as the Mason-Dixon Line. But had you grown up in the Deep South during the time of William Faulkner's short story, "A Rose for Emily," the differences would be a little clearer. The South's hatred of the Northern states had been building since long before the Civil War. Most Northerners disapproved of the slavery still in existence in Southern states, and Southerners did not care for the large number of immigrants that flocked to Northern cities. As the Civil War drew near, the North's political power became overwhelming; and when Abraham Lincoln was elected president, the Southern states soon seceded, and Lincoln sent troops into the new Confederacy to bring them under control--and back into the Union.

Abraham Lincoln's promise not to increase slavery was well received.

People in the North thought that the American way of politics was skewed in favor of the Southern states.

People in the north were involved in manufacturing, while people in the south were involved in the slave trade. Slavery escalated tensions between the North and the South.

Lincoln wrote the following letter resolving the differences

22 December 1860: Letter to Alexander Stephens

Are the people of the South really afraid that a Republican administration, directly or indirectly, would interfere with their slaves, or with them, as far as their slaves are concerned? If so, I would like to assure you, as a former friend and yet I hope not an enemy, that there is no reason for such apprehension. You think slavery is right and should be extended; while we think it is bad and should be limited. That's the friction, I suppose. That is certainly the only significant difference between us.
