When the amount of oxygen in body tissue decreases & the concentration of carbon dioxide increases, this affects the breathing rate of a person. In order to attain the normal levels of gases back, the breathing rate of a person increases.

Reasons for increased breathing rate:-

Exercise
Tension/stress
Infection like cold/pneumonia
Lung disease like asthma.
Chest pain/head ache.
Note- If the condition of increased breathing (hyperventilation) persists for longer time, then the level of carbon dioxide in the blood gets reduced which can cause various other problems like dizziness, weakness, fainting, etc.
