Strategies undertaken by the government to reduce unemployment :

(i) Rural Self-Employment Scheme : Our government has introduced various schemes for creating self-employment opportunities in rural areas. In April 1999, Swarna Jayanti Gram­Sewa Rozgar Yojana (SGSY) was introduced whose main aim was to improve opportunities of self-development in rural areas.

(ii)    Wage-employment Schemes : Main objective of this scheme was to provide opportunities for wage earning to rural people. Since June 23, 1999, all these schemes were merged with Jawahar Gram Samridhi Yojana (JGSY).

(iii)   Various schemes for providing employment to educated in urban areas : Various schemes like Prime Minister Rozgar Yojana, (PMRY), Swam Jayanti Shahri Rozgar Yojana (SJSRY) has been started by the government for providing employment to the educated youth in urban area.

Government is taking measures to enhance the employment rate in our nation. The following are some of the steps taken :

a. The government has launched many projects and programmes such as Prime Minister Rojgar Yojana (PMRY),  Rural Employment Generation Programme (REGP), etc.

b.  The government also originated the National Food for Work Programme (NFWP), in 2004. It was started in the 150 most underdeveloped regions of the nation.  The purpose of the programme has signified to contribute more support to these underprivileged areas.

c. The National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) 2005  which was legislated in September 2005 and presents 100 days guaranteed work every year to every rural family. The act proposes to guarantee the right to work and subsistence in pastoral areas.

d. Government is also raising investment in undeveloped regions in order to build roads and providing proper facilities.
