Examples may explain best.

Harmful friction:

Friction in bearings of machinery (energy loss)

Friction between an object and the surface it stands on (if you are trying to push it)

Useful friction:

Automotive clutch

Brakes (energy loss)

Friction between your feet and the surface you are standing on (without it you cannot walk, think of trying to walk on ice)

As you may have noticed the same class of friction may both be harmful and useful.
