The Swadeshi movement was a part of India’s independence movement and developing Indian nationalism. It was an economic stratagem intended at eliminating the British Empire from ruling and enhancing India’s economic conditions by adopting the principles of swadeshi which was quite successful. The three branches of Swadeshi Movement according to Gandhi is religion, education and economic.
EXPLANATION:
- Gandhiji wanted Indians to rely on their religion and language, education, and economy instead of relying or co-opting on elements from overseas, especially from England. With regard to religion, Gandhiji encouraged return to Hinduism as he held that if Indians realised their religion imperfect in certain ways, they must reform it instead of turning to other religions.
- As regards education, Gandhi felt that Indians must be educated in their native language and not in English so that learning could be shared with people who could not speak English. The notion of Swadeshi had specific significance to economics. He felt that Indians must purchase clothes and other merchandise from local manufacturers instead of relying on English imports .
