All thunderstorms, severe or not, must have three conditions present in order to develop. The first necessary condition is moisture in the lower and mid levels of the atmosphere. As airrises in a thunderstorm updraft, moisture condenses into small water drop which form clouds (and eventually precipitation).

There are 3 necessary ingredients for a thunderstorm:


1.Moisture in the form of water vapor in the air near the surface


2.Instability - as measured by the decrease of temperature with height


3.Lift - Air in thunderstorms must be carried upward by some process, to the point where the ascending air becomes buoyant, called the Level of Free Convection
