The friction force depends on two factors:

  • a) The materials that are in contact. The two materials and the nature of their surfaces.

  • b) The force pushing the two surfaces together. Pushing the surfaces together causes the more of the asperities to come together and increases the surface area in contact with each other.

Two main factors affecting friction:

  • Nature of the two surfaces in contact.
  • The force with which the two surfaces are pressed together.

In brief:

Nature of the two surfaces in contact.

→ The amount of friction depends on the materials from which the two surfaces are made of. The rough surface produces more friction & smooth surface produces less friction.

The force with which the two surfaces are pressed together.

→ The amount of friction depends upon the weight of the object. More the weight of the object, more the force will be by which surfaces are pressed together and hence the greater friction will be.

Same as that, less the weight of the object, less the force will be by which surfaces are pressed together and hence the less friction will be.

→ Some extra information:

What is friction?

→ Friction is the force that resists the motion of an object or retards(slow down) the motion.

● It always acts in the opposite direction to that of the motion of the body.
