As an Indian classical music student, here is my answer.
Indian classical music is divided into two main systems. They are as follows:
1) North Indian Classical Music or Hindustani Music
2) South Indian Classical Music or Karnataki Music
Hindustani music has 10 thaats, and many raagas. It is the most beautiful and difficult type of song.
Karnataki music has mainly 72 thaats and has many bhajans.
