The cohesion-tension theory is a theory of intermolecular attraction that explains the process of water flow upwards (against the force of gravity) through the xylem of plants. It was proposed in 1894 by John Joly and Henry Horatio Dixon.

The objections of Cohesion-Tension Theory is explained or listed in the following points -

1. Under the large tensions that are important for pulling water to the top parts of the plants, the tensile power of water is not sufficient.

2. Also, under tension, the water columns are unstable and can form hollows or cavities.

3. If air bubbles are present, then, it is impossible to have the tensive channels.
