Answer:

According to the Nature oxides are classified into two categories-

Simple oxide-

Oxides having metals in only one oxidation state .

Example- MgO , Al_{2}O_{3}   , Na_{2} O, K_{2}O \ etc.

Simple oxides are classified into four sub-categories.

  • Acidic oxides- They are formed by reaction of non metals with oxygen.

Example- S_{8} + 8O_{2}8SO_{2}

  • Basic oxides- Metals react with O_{2} and forms basic oxides.

Example- 2Ca + O_{2} → 2CaO

  • Amphoteric oxides- Some elements forms oxides by reaction with O_{2} which is amphoteric in nature.

Example- H_{2} O + NH_{3}NH_{4} OH

  • Neutral oxide- Oxides which do not change pH of water when dissolved in it and neither behave as acid nor as base.

Example- CO,NO,N_{2} O

Mixed oxide-

Oxides having metals in only one oxidation state.

Example- FeO, Fe_{2} O_{3}
