* Many species of marine algae such as Sargassum, and Laminaria are edible and thus can be eaten. *Chlorella and Spirulina are used as food supplements being rich in proteins.

*Agar is used in the preparation of jellies and ice-cream.

* Many red algae such as Corallina are used in treating worm infections.
