Weed control is important in agriculture. Methods comprise hand cultivation using hoes, "powered cultivation" with cultivators, "smothering" with mulch, "lethal wilting" with high heat, "burning", and "chemical control" with herbicides (weed killers)
Explanation:
- Weed management is the botanical aspect of pest control, aimed at avoiding weeds, in particular harmful weeds' interference with the desirable flora and fauna including the domesticated plants and animals and preventing non-native species from interfering with the indigenous species in natural habitats.
- Weeds compete with productive crops or pasture, may be poisonous, abhorrent, produce burrs, nettles and often interfere with use and management of desirable plants by interfering with livestock/contaminating harvests.
- Preventative weed control applies to any management system aimed at preventing the growth of weeds in a field, pasture or greenhouse. Examples of weed preventive management may include the use of approved weed-free plants, the shipment of weed-free hay only, the cleaning of farm equipment and the filtering of irrigating water, so as to avoid water seeds from passing through irrigation ditches.
- Some of the measures for domestic weed control are crowd out weeds using a thick lawn cover, maintaining healthy soil, tilling the garden, mulching garden beds, covering the ground with "landscape fabric", burning weeds, using biological controls such as animals & insects, vinegar & other organic herbicides
- Weed control such as cultural weed control methods include crop rotation, avoiding over-grazing of range land/pastures, using "well-adapted" competitive "forage species", and maintaining good "soil fertility" can be adopted as such weeds are less likely to grow/increase. Control of weeds using chemical (herbicides) in weeds or soil for control weed species' germination/growth
- Mechanical weed control includes any method requiring agricultural machinery for weed control. The two most frequently used mechanical control techniques are mowing & tillage.
- Biological weed control includes the usage of natural enemies of weed plants in order to control the germination or propagation of weed seed. There are several examples of this rapidly growing area of weed management. Example of biological weed control is the use of goats for the controlling brush/rangelands, the chrysolira beetle to control St. John's Wor .
