The amount of energy available to the next trophic level is very minimal. So there are only 4-5 trophic levels

Trophic levels are steps of the food chain

Trophic levels go in this order:

  1. Plants (producer)
  2. primary consumer (Eg: cow )
  3. secondary consumer (Eg; fox)
  4. tertiary consumer ( Eg: lion or humans )
  • a food chain must consist of 3 to 4 trophic levels because there is a great deal or loss of energy on moving to the next level
  • therefore if there is a 5th step or a 6th step this would result in that organism getting very little or no energy at all.
