The two main themes found in the novel Black Midas are Greed and Class-conflict.
Written by Guyanese author Jan Carew, Black Midas was first published in 1969.
Set in postcolonial Guyana, it tells the story of an orphan who quickly strikes it rich as a diamond prospector. But his efforts at going up in society is cut short when he is cheated of his entire wealth. Not to be out done, he goes back to the mines and works with vengeance only to get caught in an accident and be maimed. In the end all that he has left are his dreams of returning to farming.
