Based on production of H+ ions acids are divided into three parts:-

(i) Mono basic acid:- It is an acid which produce only one hydrogen ion per molecule of acid.

  • Example:- HCl, HNO3, CH3COOH, etc.

(ii) Di Basic Acid:- It is an acid which produce two hydrogen ion per molecule of acid.

  • Examples:- H2SO4, H2CO3 or carbonic acid, H2SO3, etc.

(iii) Tri basic acid:- Those acids which produce three hydrogen ion per molecule of acid are known as tri basic acid.

  • Example:- H3PO4 or phosphoric acid.

➖ An acid produces hydrogen ions in solution because it reacts with the water molecules by giving a proton to them.

➖ When hydrogen chloride gas dissolves in water to produce hydrochloric acid, the hydrogen chloride molecule gives a proton (a hydrogen ion) to a water molecule.
