■ It is used for bleaching silk and wool.

It is mainly used as bleaching agent for cotton, linen and wood pulp.

Bleaching action of bleaching powder is due to oxidation and it is permanent

CaOCl2 + H2O——-Ca(OH)2 + Cl2

Cl2 + H2O——- O +2HCl

COLOR+O—-> COLORLESS

■ Bleaching powder is used s disinfectant and germicide especially in the sterilization of drinking water.

■ It is used for manufacturing of chloroform.

■ It is used as an oxidising agent in many chemical industries to obtain various chemical products.

C2H5OH+Cl2—->CH3CHO + 2HC

Explanation:

1)Bleaching powder is a pale yellowish powder existing with a strong smell of chlorine.

It is soluble in water but due to the presence of impurities, we never observe a clear solution.

Its chemical formula is CaOCl2 with its chemical name as Calcium hypochlorite.

2)Washing soda is a chemical compound with the formula Na2CO3, known as sodium carbonate, and it's a salt of carbonic acid. Some use washing soda to make homemade laundry detergent, to clean especially in hard water, and some even use it as a laundry additive to soften water.
